Kent, Ana
I do Sumi- e painting which is using natural materials like ink sticks to make ink, using bamboo paint brush with real animal hair, ink stones that are hand carved and rice paper or mulberry paper that is handmade. Focus of my artwork is predominantly nature. To observe beauty around one and then draw out of memory. And this body of work is titled enso: circle of life – it highlights the theme “in discipline is true freedom “. To find one’s purpose and dedicate oneself truly to it sets one on the path of true freedom.
I lost my short-term memory the second time I had Covid and lost word recognition, at that time a friend suggested I pick up a creative hobby to improve my memory. After much thought I came across Japanese ink painting and it resonated with me. I was fortunate enough to find a good teacher and embarked on a journey to learn this art form in hope to pass it on someday. Sumi-e painting is a very meditative and enlightening experience each time I engage in it.
