Riddell, Helen
Helen is a contemporary abstract artist based in the South Downs, Hampshire, working from her studio in Bishops Waltham. Alongside a 25-year career in television and following her relocation from London, she developed and expanded her painting practice into its current full-time focus, centring on materiality, atmosphere and emotional resonance. Her background degree in Visual Arts continues to inform an intuitive and process-led approach. Drawing inspiration from the shifting skies and coastal landscapes that surround her, Helen’s work explores contrasts — movement and stillness, energy and calm, strength and vulnerability. Her paintings evolve through layers of texture and colour, creating immersive surfaces that reveal depth, rhythm, and subtle transitions. Working with palette knives and mixed media including modelling paste and sand, Helen builds richly tactile compositions that invite sustained viewing and personal interpretation. Colour plays a central role within her practice, moving between deep, grounding tones and moments of luminosity and release. Helen has exhibited nationally, and her work is held in numerous private collections. Through abstraction, she creates spaces that encourage reflection, connection, and contemplation.
