Thomason, Vivien
Vivien is an accomplished colourist and abstract artist based in North London. Her work is defined by richly layered liquid acrylics, using techniques of dripping, swirling and pouring developed through years of experimentation and refinement. Exploring themes of feminism, the climate crisis and the human condition, her paintings radiate vibrant energy, immediacy and dramatic atmospheric colour. Metallic elements often appear within the work, evoking subtle echoes of medieval religious iconography.
While the mood of the paintings is distinctly Gothic, this intensity is frequently tempered with wit and humour. Recurring motifs include Furies, female demons and Egyptian goddesses, rendered as abstract forms that are intuitively poured before being carefully guided and refined. These figures embody resistance and transformation, confronting misogyny, injustice and broader social evils. Vivien’s visual language is deeply personal, emotionally charged and at times deliberately provocative.
Following a long and successful career in fashion, Vivien now dedicates herself entirely to her artistic practice. Her previous experience continues to inform her work, particularly in the Necklace series, where bead-like forms reference gemstones and their symbolic meanings — Topaz representing truth, Opal hope, and other stones carrying their own associations.
Over the past year, Vivien has held three solo gallery exhibitions in Highgate and Dorset, alongside an extensive history of group exhibitions and gallery shows.
