Clarke, Natalie
Natalie Clarke is a South African born fine artist living and working near London. She creates nature-inspired art that invites introspection. Her symbolist, mixed media paintings are otherworldly excavations of memory and energy, inspired by the sublime light, vast space and intuitive rhythms of the natural world. She links transience in nature with the ever-changing emotional landscape of human experience, focusing on the invisible yet felt forces that shape us. Natalie has an Honours degree in Fine Art and after 20 years spent in arts education, now devotes herself fully to her art practice.
These semi-abstract waterscapes from her ‘Underwater Excavations’ collection act as visual meditations on the oceanic terrain of the inner self – spaces of stillness, submerged emotion and luminous emergence. They link the healing dimension of water (coursing through our veins) with the intuitive wisdom of the heart – both fluid, life-affirming entities that carry memory, energy and unseen power.
Inspired by scientific research on the intelligence of water as a memory keeper, she explores how our inner waters pulsing through our heart create an electromagnetic resonance and an engine of aliveness.
Like the sea revealing buried treasure, these paintings mirror the transformative power of self-excavation. Ethereal blue and green hues combined with bioluminescent light evoke stillness, reminding us that lightness arises from presence, true alignment and vitality from within. Majestic sharks suggest intuitive navigation through uncharted territories, encouraging a deep dive inward to emerge with renewed clarity and strength. Both moths (metaphors for transformation) and jellyfish (metaphors for aliveness) evoke the sensation of ascending from depth to surface. Radiating threads evoke the heart’s electromagnetic power to connect and influence and are also suggestive of synapses, regeneration, shark nets, wing patterns and ley lines, unveiling intricate forces that connect the body with the earth and the heart with spirit.
