Corbett, Jane

Jane’s 40 years of creative practice include painting, mixed media sculpture, ceramics and glass on a domestic scale, along with 20 years as a couture milliner. In the last three years Jane has focused on a return to painting.

‘As a result of my fascination for the visual delights of historical ‘Cabinets of Curiosity’ and unusual collections I am inventing my own curious collections in my work; shells, feathers, bones and seeds sit alongside entirely imagined treasures. Often painted within a frame of niches or boxes suggesting a glimpse into a private cabinet. How I chose to frame my work is also important. I am fascinated by how ‘precious’ can be implied by how an object is displayed. Recently I have also been exploring the phenomenon of tulip mania; the high-risk search for imperfect perfection in ‘broken tulips’.

I am a collector of ‘treasures’, natural finds sit alongside votives, lucky charms, tokens, and random finds that delight my eye. Inspiration is just as likely to come from a find in the hedgerow, an antiques emporium, as it is a piece of contemporary ceramic, or a visit to a museum or collection.
