Hicks, Charlotte

Visualising the power of the feminine, Charlotte Hicks (b. 1997) is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in London. She gained her BA (Hons) in Painting from Edinburgh College of Art in 2019, from which she was selected for Orbit’s UK Graduate Show at OXO Bargehouse in London and Art Pistol’s “Breakout” Artists Exhibition in Glasgow. Working across quilting, sewing, painting, printmaking, and collage, Hicks’ practice is both playful and quietly confronting.  Her use of soft colour palettes, textiles and repeated patterns act as a soft entry point into a more challenging subject matter: society’s persistent devaluation of femininity in all its forms. Through recurring motifs, symbols and processes, she attempts to confront our collective internalised ideas of femininity as weakness, instead reclaiming it as a site of strength, resilience and power.
