Hughes, Grace

Grace Hughes is a self-taught landscape artist living and working in her adopted home of rural North Wales. Inspired to paint from a young age by the rugged Cornish coastline where she spent countless family holidays as a child, she spent sixteen years as a professional translator before deciding to return to her first love and make landscape painting her primary focus once more in2025.Working primarily in acrylics, Grace’s paintings combine delicate brushwork and expressive, layered textures produced with a pallet knife to create arresting scenes that capture the intense feelings conjured by a landscape, with light and colour playing an important role in her work.A passionate believer that art should make the observer feel something real, she is drawn to the hills and mountains of the landscape she calls home – the drama of a spectacular sky at dawn, the play of light on a hillside or the calm of a still mountain lake. Whilst her work is rooted in a specific locale, it taps into the universality of human experience by exploring our connection with nature, the power, beauty and vulnerability of the natural world and our often-profound and transformative encounters with it. She is heavily influenced by the Welsh concept of Cynefin, a term that encapsulates a deep sense of belonging within a particular setting, where our well-being and sense of self is shaped by our environment – the landscape, culture and history around us.Since becoming a full-time, professional artist in 2025, she has had two exhibitions in North Wales. Her work is held in private collections both across the UK and internationally.Originally from Derbyshire, Grace moved to rural Denbighshire in 2022, where she lives with her husband, two children and various pets on a smallholding in a tiny village on the edge of Eryri, or Snowdonia. When not painting, she enjoys singing in her local Welsh ladies’ choir, playing piano and guitar and exploring the local hills with her dogs. She is also deeply fascinated by the history and ancient traditions of Wales.
