Speller, Clare

Clare Speller is an award-winning British Fine Artist working from her studio on the edge of the Staffordshire Moorlands and the Peak District. 

Using a technique that employs a form of marquetry, she takes sections from traditionally prepared abstract paintings in oil on canvas, jute or linen, and reconfigures these into a more lucid, and sharply wrought, singular piece. The horizon line of the landscape has recently been a starting point, but other subjects and concepts emerge such as ambergris or masts, the metaphoric nature of the skies, or the mystery of the ground beneath us.

Interest is growing for this unique and expressive approach that contemplates the textural solidity of folk art with the ethereal and energetic aspect of humanity within the physical world.
