Storr, Gillian

Gill Storr, a local Contemporary Artist with a background in graphic design, seamlessly merges her design expertise with her artistic vision. Drawing on past inspirations, she enhances her unique creations, refining her style over the years to focus solely on her art. Her works grace numerous private collections in the UK and US, solidifying her presence in the contemporary art scene.

Gill’s transition into the art world was driven by her desire to explore her creativity outside the confines of the corporate marketing world. She describes her approach as a ‘deconstructed lens,’ incorporating tactile elements into her work and crafting pieces that combine traditional mediums like paints, oils, and gels with photographic elements. Each artwork juxtaposes abstract realism with traditional photography, inviting viewers to see the scene through her eyes. Through the addition of physical texture and bold brush strokes, Gill accentuates key focal points, offering a distinct yet shared visual experience.

Her collections encompass Icons, Cityscapes, People & Places, Life, and Sailing, with her acclaimed Rowing collection gaining notable popularity. This sentimental series is deeply inspired by her Great Uncle, Bill East, who served as the Royal Bargemaster to King Edward VII in 1906. Bill’s lifelong connection to the Thames saw him as a fixture at the Cambridge University Boat Club, where he trained and coached crews and authored the definitive guide “Rowing and Sculling.”

Bill East’s legacy is rich with rowing history and achievements. Born in 1866 near Lambeth Pier in London, Bill spent his entire life on or by the Thames. He became a waterman’s apprentice in 1882, won the Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race in 1887, and claimed the Sculling Championship of England in 1891. By 1898, he was appointed as a waterman to the Queen, and in 1906, he was honoured as the King’s Bargemaster. Bill’s influence on rowing extended to coaching at Cambridge University BC and mentoring famous rowers like Benjamin Hunting Howell, who won prestigious titles under his guidance. His book “Rowing and Sculling” remains a testament to his expertise and dedication to the sport.

The Thames has always been a central thread in Gill’s family tapestry. Generations have been drawn to its waters, and Gill herself has spent most of her life in close proximity to the river, residing in the Marlow and Bourne End area. Being commissioned to create a bespoke piece for Marlow’s newest venue, ‘The Grand Assembly,’ is a full-circle moment for Gill. This project beautifully merges her passion for art with her family’s rich history. As a local artist with deep ties to the town, this artwork symbolises the harmonious blend of her personal and professional life, making it an unforgettable commission.
